May 9 Elephant Seals

We had very much looked forward to experiencing the California beaches along Highway 1, but a landslide had closed  the road North of this point.
When we stopped here at Ragged Point we found the beach absolutely  full of molting elephant seals.
Bryce made friends with a squirrel.

A volunteer seal protector explained to us that the seals cover themselves with sand to keep cool as they have come from the arctic to molt here on the beach where they were born.

This is the setting for Hearst Castle.  These beautiful rolling hills run right along the beach as far as we traveled.
